"Can other lesbian health professionals join ALMA?"

  • We sometimes receive enquiries from lesbian nurses, physios and dentists about joining ALMA. We have debated this at length within ALMA, and at the moment membership is limited to lesbian doctors and medical students.
  • We recognise that lesbian women training and working in health face similar issues, and that so far there are not a lot of support groups out there. If you would like to start up a group, and we can help in any way, please let us know!
  • All health professionals are able to join the National LGBTI Health Alliance who hold the wonderful Health in Difference conference.

"Is there a group for gay male doctors?"

  • Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there isn't a group specifically for gay male doctors.
  • However there is a group called Rainbow Doctors Australia who have an active Facebook group that welcomes both medical students and doctors within the LGBTI community.
  • There is also a group GLADD (Gay and Lesbian Doctors and Dentists) who ran a float in the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade in 2013 to much acclaim. A float is now planned for 2014 (see www.facebook.com/GLADDSYDNEY)
  • Rainbow Doctors is a closed Facebook group. If you would like to make contact with the group email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will put you in touch.

"Can I leave something to ALMA in my will?"

  • Yes, and we are glad you asked! Bequests are one of the ways that overseas LGBTIQ organisations have become financially independent. Click here for more information.
